529 Plan and College Savings

Question: Can you start a 529 college savings plan before the child is born?

I am signing up for Upromise and they offer a 529 Plan as an option. The only problem is that I don’t have any children yet (I just like to plan ahead). Can you start one without the child being born yet?

Answer: You need a SS# for a beneficiary in order to start one. Technically you can create one w/ someone else as the beneficiary, and then change it after you receive the SS#, but that might be too much trouble.
