College Savings Illinois

Question: College Savings Bonds?
When I was a baby or young child my aunts and uncles would get me Illinois College Savings Bonds I believe I have like 1,000 in savings. i am now 18, i asked my parents were they are they said they dont know and there should be a site online probably were you can enter your ss. How can I get this money? I am 18 now, also does it have to be used towards college or could i buy a laptop for college with it? what if my parents cashed them?
Answer: Call your state treasurer at 217-524-0377 and explain the situation. They may be able to look them up by your SSN or name — BUT, normally the bonds were registered to the person who purchased them. (Unlike US Savings Bonds, which are often registered to a child when purchased.)
You might have to approach those aunts and uncles to see if they could chase them down.
